[Announcement] Peace Network welcomes the realization of inter-Korean summit
On August 8th, North and South Korean government made an official announcement that the inter-Korean summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun is going to be held in Pyongyang during August 28th to 30th. We, Peace Network, as an actor who has constantly asserted the need of prompt inter-Korean summit for the improvement of North and South Korean relationship, the settlement of peace in Korean peninsula, and the establishment of foundation for peace, welcome this announcement.
The historical significant which this inter-Korean conference offers is enormous. Primary, it is worthwhile to mention that this meeting is going to happen at the time of watchful eyes worrying that peace process in Korean peninsula is happening under the lead of the North Korea – US relationship and six party talks. If the peace progresses under the assistance of North Korea – US relationship and six party talk, there is a danger of Korean peace system flowing to harden the division rather than to aim the unification. In this circumstance, one could appraise its intention for this conference that could be the key opportunity of parallel development of international and national assistances. Surely, North and South government should put their effort to get such results from the inter-Korean summit.
Some criticize the inter-Korean summit being used for the next presidential election, but as the election on April 2000 confirmed, South Korean citizens have enough ability to separate the election with the inter-Korean summit. Rather, interpreting the summit for the political purposes and overly emphasizing it would cause criticism on taking advantage of the meeting for one’s benefit on the election. The government and wide-ranging ruling party also should eagerly participate in inter party of South Korea talk for this upcoming inter-Korean summit to have national support and trans-party cooperation.
